MANCHESTER, Maine -- Three rounds in the 70s, paced by a four-over-par 74 from
Jake Mielcarz, guided the University of New England men's golf team to a 3rd-place finish out of nine programs competing Thursday (Sept. 28) at the Maine Maritime Academy Mariner Invitational from Augusta Country Club.
Chris Kauppila of Husson University carded an even-par 70 to top the field of 45 individuals, and the Eagles ran the table in the top five to post a team score of 284. That was 30 shots clear of Colby College (314), with the Nor'easters next at 318, and the University of Southern Maine fourth with 322.
Mielcarz shared the 7th position at the end of the day with his low score of the month.
Trevor Flanagan was two behind with a 76, and
Jack Sicurella also had his best 18 holes of the season with 78.
Patrick Stone rounded out the UNE total with a 90.
The Nor'easters will now prepare for the USM Fall Classic on Sunday at Spring Meadows Golf Club, and then to host four other squads at Cape Arundel Golf Club on Monday (10 a.m.) in the UNE Invitational.
