CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Preseason No.12 Massachusetts Institute of Technology recorded a 5-0 field hockey result against the University of New England as the 2023 campaign began on Friday afternoon (Sep. 1) at Jack Barry Field.
The Engineers (1-0) opened the scoring in the 7th minute when Ingrid Tomovski received a penalty corner insert from Sammi Blocher and drove a low shot into the left side. That margin held until the 21st minute, when Janie Thomas found the far corner from the right side.
The hosts added one more just before the halftime break off the stick of Eva Oppenheim, redirecting a shot by Paige Forester that was headed across the crease towards the far post. Early in the 3rd quarter, Forester converted a feed from Tomovski to make it 4-0.
Anna Simmons setup Tomovski for a five-point day on a corner to cap the scoring in the waning seconds.
Maeve Zimmer went 45 minutes in goal with one save before giving way to Anna Duncan, who made two stops to finish off the MIT clean sheet. The Engineers ended with an 18-3 edge in total shots (10-3 on-goal) and 11-5 on corners.
In her first career start, junior
Dawn DeWeese-Moss logged five saves between the UNE posts. The Nor'easters are back in action on Tuesday at No.14 Bowdoin College.
