WENHAM, Mass. -- Topped by a winning performance from Anna Evans in the high jump, the University of New England finished in 3rd out of seven institutions at the 2023 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Women's Track & Field Championship on Saturday (Apr. 29) at the Brigham Athletic Complex on the campus of Gordon College.

The Nor'easters continued their improvement in the final standings, after placing 6th during their inaugural varsity season in 2021 and 4th in 2022. UNE's depth was a big factor in totaling 118 points to wind up behind only Endicott College (166) and Suffolk University (142). Rounding out the top five were Roger Williams University (84) and Gordon (53).

While 12 of the program's 13 previous medals came from running events, nine of the 12 on Saturday were generated from jumpers and throwers.

Evans backed up her 2022 title in the high jump by clearing 1.55 meters; only one other competitor was within four inches of that height.

UNE cleaned up with 18 points from the triple jump, as Izabella Haagenson took 2nd (10.08 meters) while Sydni Lehr and Eden Morris tied for 3rd (9.95). Haagenson and Lehr paced the Nor'easters with three medals each, which included combining with Morris and Emily Buchter for 3rd in the 4x100 relay (53.34).

Haagenson also crossed the line 2nd in the 400m hurdles (1:11.05), and added a 4th from the long jump (4.72 meters). The long jump was Lehr's other medal effort, measuring a school-record 4.99 meters for 2nd place.

Nina Parziale finished with 2nd place in the 5,000m (18:01.93) -- a school-record time and a year removed from winning the event. The Nor'easters gained more points from the 5K, as well, with Kelsee Gladu (5th, 18:52.56) and Haley Slattery (6th, 19:04.28).

Sarah LaVita earned points in three events, including a 2nd-place distance in the javelin (32.35 meters), which was a mere 0.12 off the leading mark. Olivia Chase took 2nd in the hammer (35.54 meters), with LaVita posting 30.70 for 4th. In the discus, Sienna Matregrano landed 3rd with a throw of 32.38 meters, ahead of Kassidy Plummer (4th, 32.09) and LaVita (6th, 31.19).

Matregrano factored in scoring for two competitions, adding in a 6th in the shot put (9.84 meters), which supported a 3rd-place mark out of Cheyenne Cahill (11.56).

Additional individual points came from Megan Fecteau in the 3,000m steeplechase (4th, school-record 12:27.91), Jessie Martin in the 1,500m (4th, 5:06.84), Sophia King in the 400m hurdles (5th, 1:13.34), and Buchter in the 100m dash (13.26). The same foursome from the 4x100 relay also contributed a 4th-place finish in the 4x400 (4:24.15).

The Nor'easters will have select individuals competing next weekend at the New England Championships, based on qualifying marks.
