BIDDEFORD, Maine -- University of New England student-athletes
Mackenzie Burke,
Kelsee Gladu, and
Marcus Costa have been recognized as the Athletics Department's Senior Scholar-Athletes of the Year for 2022-23, as it was announced during the University's Biddeford Campus Undergraduate Awards Ceremony on Tuesday evening (Apr. 25).
Burke has been a four-year member of the women's rugby program, and spent this past season with the women's basketball team, as well. Gladu has been a four-year member of the women's cross country squad, and is in the midst of her third season as part of the women's track & field program. Costa has been a four-year member of the men's golf team.
Other student-athletes that were honored during the ceremony:
- Outstanding Student Award for Biochemistry: Carolyn Curley, women's ice hockey
- Outstanding Student Award for Data Science: Caleb Bowles, men's lacrosse
- Outstanding Student Award for Medical Biology (Medical Sciences): Costa
- Outstanding Student Award for Mental Health Rehabilitation: Burke
- Outstanding Student Award for Sustainability & Business: Kate Lindmark, field hockey
- Jessica Cox Henderson 1886 Award for Activism: Meghan Smith, women's rugby
- College of Arts & Sciences Dean's Leadership Award: Sarah Padellaro, field hockey
Additionally, three student-athletes were among the four nominees for the Jacques Downs Award for Academic Excellence, which is the highest graduating honor within the College of Arts & Sciences: Costa, Padellaro, and
Kyle Poulin (football).
Gaining induction into the Alpha Chi Honor Society (academic top 10 percent of the third or fourth-year class), were the following:
Jenna Deschamps (women's lacrosse),
Piper Desorcie (women's ice hockey),
Ethan Dispoto (men's soccer),
Sydni Lehr (women's track & field),
Emily Martin (women's soccer),
Karl Mohr (men's soccer), and
Bella Reil (women's soccer).
Into the Psi Chi Honor Society (Psychology):
Brooke Coen (women's soccer),
Bridget Lynch (women's rugby), and
Cam Mann (football).
Into the Pi Theta Epsilon Honor Society (Occupational Therapy):
