Nor'easters take 5th place at Pine Tree Classic

STANDISH, Maine -- The University of New England women's track & field team finished in 5th place out of nine institutions competing at the Pine Tree Classic hosted by Saint Joseph's College on Saturday (Apr. 22) at the SJC Athletics Complex.

The Nor'easters totaled 72 points to wind up behind Bates College (156), the University of Southern Maine (128), Bowdoin College (107), and Colby College (104). Husson University (68) and Thomas College (62) were next behind UNE.

In the javelin, Sarah LaVita exceeded her own school record and New England Championships qualifying mark from last week by 0.47 meters, throwing it 37.42 meters. On the day, she recorded four of her six longest distances this season, and placed 2nd in the meet.

Cheyenne Cahill had already achieved the NE standard in the shot put but did it again, recording 11.37 meters to take 4th in the event. In the discus, Kassidy Plummer and Olivia Chase took 3rd (33.57 meters) and 4th (33.37 meters), respectively, both with personal bests. Chase was also 0.49 meters off her own UNE season-best in the hammer throw (38.10).

Other field athletes with top-5 showings on Saturday were Sydni Lehr in the triple jump (4th, 9.89 meters), Sienna Matregrano in the javelin (4th, 27.34 meters), and Anna Evans in the high jump (1.47 meters). Lehr was also less than one inch away off her own UNE season-best in the long jump (4.78 meters).

After setting the school record in the 200m last week, Emily Buchter 0.22 seconds better this time around, clocking 27.69 to place 3rd.

Sophia King lowered her own school record in the 100m hurdles by 0.07 seconds (18.20), while Izabella Haagenson matched her program mark in the 400m hurdles (1:10.97) and placed 5th.

Haley Slattery picked up a 3rd-place showing in the 5,000m with a season-best by more than 17 ticks (19:06.32), and Jessie Martin established UNE's season-best in the 800m by 0.72 seconds (2:31.08).

The Nor'easters will now prepare for next Saturday's Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championship at Gordon College.
