Tournament Summary
BIDDEFORD, Maine – The University of New England women's rugby team finished 3-1 in group play and made it to the championship game of the Nor'easter 7's Tournament held at Blue Storm Stadium on Saturday. The Nor'easter B side won all four of its games.
Celeste Valerio and
Meghan Smith led the Nor'easter A side with four tries each.
Mackenzie Burke had three tries and seven conversions on the day.
Olivia Mitchell and
Kati Whitcomb also provided three tries each.
UNE defeated Colby-Sawyer 34-0 to begin the afternoon. Burke had touched in three tries and had two conversions while Whitcomb scored twice.
The Nor'easters fell behind 12-0 in the first half in its next match against Bowdoin.
Mackayla O'Meara and
Elizabeth Goodrich scored back-to-back tries and Burke nailed a conversion as UNE battled back to tie the game 12-12 in the second. Lauryn Eisenhart and Rebecca Vakarau responded with two quick scores for the Polar Bears as they dealt UNE its only loss of group play at 22-12.
UNE responded with a 34-5 victory over Norwich. The Nor'easters led 27-0 before allowing the first points to the Cadets. Five different players scored for UNE led by two tries from Valerio and a try and two conversions from Mitchell.
Smith scored all four of her tries in a 45-5 victory over Castleton to close out group play and secure a spot in the championship for UNE.
The Nor'easters matched up with undefeated Bowdoin in the final game. Mitchell scored early in the match and Burke nailed the conversion kick to give UNE a 7-0 lead. Those would be the last points of the day for the Nor'easters as Eisenhart scored two of the Polar Bears' final four tries as it grabbed a 20-7 victory.
The UNE B side rolled to a 4-0 record on the day.
Sam Malley led the side and all tournament players with eight tries on the day. Dominique Naperano added five tries for the Nor'easters. Naperano scored the lone second-half try in the first game of the day to lift UNE to a 19-12 victory over Bowdoin B to open the day.
Leah Underwood hit a conversion kick on the final try.
UNE went up 20-0 in its other B side game of the day against Bowdoin and withstood a late rally to claim a 20-14 victory. The Nor'easters defeated Norwich 35-5 and 20-0 in its other B side matches.
The 7s season continues for UNE next Sunday (April 23) at the Quinnipiac Bobcat 7s Tournament in Hamden, Conn.
