Nina Parziale claimed 1st place in the 5000 meter race and the University of New England women's track & field team finished 4th in a field of 20 institutions at the Tufts University Snowflake Classic at Dussault Track on Saturday (Apr. 1).
It was a new program-record of 18:04.32 for Parziale, who won the event by 1.12 seconds and earned a spot at the New England Championships with the result.
The host Jumbos captured the team title with 183 points, followed by Connecticut College (87), Wesleyan University (81), the Nor'easters (50), and Brandeis University (49.6) in the top five.
UNE racked up most of its points from the field events, which included receiving 3rd-place showings from
Sarah LaVita in both the discus and javelin,
Anna Evans in the high jump, and
Cheyenne Cahill in the shot put. LaVita contributed two solid performances following the win in the javelin last week. At Tufts, she hit 33.94m in the discus throw and 31.30m in the javelin. Evans reached 1.57m in the high jump, and Cahill's shot put was marked at 10.57m.
Sienna Matregrano wound up 5th in the shot put (9.47m) and 6th in the javelin (26.11m).
Olivia Chase added a 7th-place effort in the hammer throw (33.12m), while
Kassidy Plummer measured 30.13m to take 8th in the discus.
Izabella Haagenson placed 8th in the 400m hurdles (1:13.43), and
Sophia King was just two spots back (1:15.46). The pair also factored in the middle of the 4x400 relay that registered 5th with a time of 4:30.32;
Emily Buchter and
Sydni Lehr handled the first and last legs, respectively.
The Nor'easters will visit Gordon College next Saturday.
