HOPKINTON, N.H. --
Troy Silvestri crossed the line in 21st position to gain all-region honors in the 2023 NCAA Division III East Men's Cross Country Championship on Saturday (Nov. 11) at Hopkinton Fairgrounds. The University of New England took 19th out of the 34 institutions with a team score of 589.
Leading the team competition was national No.3 MIT, which claimed the region's one automatic berth into next weekend's national championship in Pennsylvania. The Engineers -- paced by individual winner Sam Acquaviva with an 8K time of 24:36, and followed immediately by teammates Lowell Hensgen and Vedand Lad -- totaled 35 points.
No.19 Tufts University (57), Bates College (97), and No.33 Bowdoin College (118), and WPI (130) completed the top five programs.
Silvestri's time of 25:19 left him well within the top 35 individuals, which is the cut for all-region accolades from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) [
formally announced 11/13]. He becomes the second Nor'easter to achieve the distinction, joining Jake Hickey from 2019.
Within the 299 runners, the rest of the UNE score was compiled by
Jackson Stone (118th; 28:17),
Jack O'Connor (135th; 28:43),
Isaiah Cyr (160th; 29:34), and
Tommy Norgang (162nd; 29:45).
With national team and individual at-large selections slated for Sunday, Silvestri could land a place in the field with one of the seven spots from the region.
