BEVERLY, Mass. -- Endicott College bounced back after conceding the opening goal to secure a 2-1 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) field hockey result versus the University of New England in the season finale for both teams on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 28) at North Field.
The outcome produces a three-way tie for first place in the standings at 4-1, between Roger Williams University, the Gulls (14-4 overall), and the Nor'easters (8-10 overall). It is UNE's 10th shared or outright regular-season title in program history.
By virtue of conference tiebreakers, UNE will be the No.3 seed in the postseason tournament and head right back to No.2 Endicott on Thursday (7 p.m.) for the league semifinals.
The Nor'easters struck first in the 13th minute on Saturday when
Georgia Eson tipped a drive by
Shelly Tremblay past the goalkeeper for her first goal of the season. About 12 minutes later, Tori Swanson stick-handled her way into the left side of the circle and slotted the equalizer through a crowd to pull the Gulls level.
The field tilted for the home team in the 3rd quarter, as shots were 11-1 and penalty corners registered at 6-0. Kathleen Reissfelder found the go-ahead goal for EC in the 41st minute, after a centering pass by Maddy Dengler.
Endicott kept UNE from manufacturing any scoring chances in the 4th to complete the win. Alexis DeMattia had one stop between the pipes to get the positive decision.
Dawn DeWeese-Moss posted seven saves on the other end for the Nor'easters, who received a combined four defensive saves in support from
Lauren Green (3) and
Micaela Jacobs. Green is up to 11 defensive saves on the year, the most in a UNE season since 2012 (Laura Egounis, 16).
