GRAFTON, Mass. -- The University of New England wound up in 6th position out of eight squads competing for the 2023 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Men's Golf Championship, which concluded on Friday (Oct. 20) at Highfields Golf & Country Club. Reformatted from previous years, the league's automatic bid to the 2024 NCAA Championship is now a fall-only 36-hole tournament, without a qualifying round and a cut.
Overnight leader Roger Williams University extended its cushion at the top to secure its first CCC title, totaling 600 (299-301) for a six-stroke win over two-time reigning champ Endicott College (303-303). Newest member to the conference, the University of Hartford, shot 612 (317-295), however is still in the process of reclassifying from Division I to Division III and the Hawks' results were not counting towards the final standings.
Nichols College was next in line with 616 (305-311), paced by individual winner Colby Mitchell, who posted two-under-par 142 (70-72) to edge RWU's Ryan Dacey by one (71-72).
UNE's two-day score of 669 (336-333) was headed up by
Trevor Flanagan, who went 82-80 (162) for 20th place among eligible competitors.
Jake Mielcarz (166) had the low round of 81 for the Nor'easters on Thursday, and
Jack Sicurella notched back-to-back closing birdies to open with an 82 in Round 1 before registering a 168 total.
Ben Donahue (173) had the second-best Round 2 for UNE with an 82 -- nine lower than the previous day.
Flanagan wrapped up the fall season with a 78.27 scoring average to lead the Nor'easters.
