KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine -- A three-over-par 72 from
Jake Mielcarz powered the University of New England to a 2nd-place showing out of five teams in the UNE Men's Golf Invitational on Monday (Oct. 2) at Cape Arundel Golf Club.
Endicott College captured the title for a seventh time in the history of the event by dialing up a record score of 282 (+6) -- one season removed from winning with the highest total since Cape Arundel became the regular venue in 2011. The Gulls had all five members in the top eight individuals on their way to bettering the previous standard by nine shots (291), which Saint Joseph's College had established in 2016.
EC's Frank Mahoney and Brady Burke shared the low round of the day with even-par rounds of 69 after tallying the only front nine scores under par (34, -1). Mahoney took home the hardware by winning the scorecard tiebreaker over Burke. Tyler Baker came third place in at 70, and had the best back nine (34, E) in the field of 25.
The Nor'easters were the runner-up for the seventh time in the 22 years of the invite, posting a 308 to finish ahead of the University of Maine-Farmington (311), SJC (318), and Maine Maritime Academy (335).
Mielcarz was one of three competitors, along with teammate
Trevor Flanagan, to shoot 35 on the front nine. Mielcarz's season-best score was good for a piece of 4th place.
Jack Sicurella added 77 for UNE, and
Ben Donahue supported with 79. Flanagan, who won the 2022 title (with SJC), wound up at 80.
Patrick Stone rounded out the lineup with an 88.
The Nor'easters are next in action on October 14-15 at the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championship on Cape Cod.
