BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Sage Tonomura-MacDonald tallied the first two tries of the match to stake Bowdoin College to a first-half advantage, and the Polar Bears' defense took care of the rest in a 48-0 victory over the University of New England on Senior Night at Blue Storm Stadium.
The contest was a rematch of last season's National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) Division III Championship and the first of two meetings between the rivals. UNE and Bowdoin will meet again Oct. 28 in Brunswick.
Colleen Doucette added a pair of second-half scores for the Polar Bears, who improved to 4-0 with the victory. Kyra Bishop, Katie Stomma and Lulu Linkas each contributed a try, while Lauryn Eisenhart accounted for 13 points thanks to five conversions and a penalty kick.
The Nor'easters had the better part of play over the initial 15 minutes of the contest, nearly getting the ball into the try zone on several occasions, but Bowdoin's defense held strong.
UNE (1-3-1) returns to action next Saturday (Oct. 21) with a NIRA road contest at Norwich University. The Polar Bears will head to West Chester, Pa. that same day to take on Adrian College in a neutral-site match.
