GRAY, Maine -- The University of New England men's golf team accounted for three of the top six individuals, in
Trevor Flanagan,
Jack Sicurella, and
Jake Mielcarz, on the way to a score of 308 and 1st place from the field of seven in the Husky Invitational hosted by the University of Southern Maine on Sunday (Oct. 1) at Spring Meadows Golf Club.
It was the first victory for the Nor'easters since the 2021-22 season, and the program's sixth in recent history. UNE's season-best round defeated Thomas College by seven (315), while Maine Maritime Academy (321) and the Huskies (322) took third and fourth, respectively.
While the 2022 USM tournament was a two-day contest and played at a different course, the medalist honor did not change hands. Flanagan backed up his win from a year ago (with Saint Joseph's College) by shooting a 3-over par 74, which included three birdies in the middle of the round to overcome a start where he was four-over through six holes. Flanagan was the only competitor out of the top six on the board to go even-par on the final three holes en route to securing the leading spot, which is the 10th outright or shared individual triumph in program records.
Sicurella finished in a three-way tie for 2nd place with a 75, alongside Dylan Cunningham of Thomas and Juan Carlos of Husson University. Sicurella and Cunningham led the field of 35 with 12 pars apiece on the day.
Mielcarz came in with 76 to share the 5th position with Mac McCarthy of MMA. Mielcarz was the low Nor'easter on the front side of the course (36).
Rounding out the UNE total was
Ben Donahue with an 83.
The Nor'easters get a night to rest before entertaining five institutions at Cape Arundel Golf Club in Kennebunkport on Monday (10 a.m.) in the UNE Invitational.
