WNEU pulls away from UNE in CCC First Round, 17-5

SPRINGFIELD, Mass – #3 Western New England University outscored #6 University of New England 10-1 in the second half on its way to a 17-5 victory in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Women's Lacrosse Championship First Round matchup on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Golden Bears (13-5) advance to the semifinal round and will visit #2 Endicott College on Wednesday. The Gull defeated #7 Wentworth 19-1 to advance to the second round. [Interactive Bracket]
 
UNE (4-13) hung around with WNE for most of the first half. Nicole Corriveau opened the game with and unassisted goal 1:32 into play. Samantha Vitka tied the game for the Golden Bears with 4:39 left in the first. Vitka contributed nine points on six goals and three assists in the victory.
 
Vitka put WNE ahead in the opening minute of the second quarter. Kelsey Hartigan tied the game 20 seconds later with a free-position shot. The Golden Bears scored the next three goals in a span of just 24 seconds to jump ahead 5-2 at the 12:32 mark of the second.
 
Morgan White answered with back-to-back scores for UNE to pull the Nor'easters within one at 5-4 with 10:13 to play in the half. Liz Mazza and Madisyn Crotta put in late goals as WNE led 7-4 at the half.
 
The Golden Bears pulled away in the second half outscoring UNE 7-1 in the third quarter to extend the lead to 14-5. Hartigan scored the lone goal for the Nor'easters in the second half. Vitka had two goals for WNE in the fourth quarter. Nora Farmer added a late marker in the victory.
