Bison outlast Nor’easters, 10-9

DUDLEY, Mass. – Elizabeth Luster scored with 2:33 remaining to break a tie as the Nichols College women's lacrosse team edged the University of New England, 10-9, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Bison (8-2, 2-0 CCC) jumped ahead 2-0 in the first quarter with goals by Hadley Houghton and Sam Ahaesy. The deficit remained two for the Nor'easters (1-9, 0-3 CCC) at the half, at 6-4, as each team scored four times in the second quarter. Anna Stowell had two goals in the quarter for UNE and finished with four on the day.
 
The Nor'easters started strong in the second half as Stowell scored two quick ones only 32 seconds apart to tie the game 6-6 at the 12:27 mark of the third. Ann Chapman assisted on the first goal and Morgan White helped on the tying score. Abby McHallam buried a free position shot to give UNE its first lead of the game at 7-6 with 5:03 to play in the quarter. Houghton knotted it up for the Bison in the final minute of the third.
 
UNE was never able to take another lead as the teams traded goals in the fourth quarter. Houghton contributed to all three goals for the Bison in the period and gave the hosts an 8-7 lead with 10:41 to play. Paige DeVries tied the game for the Nor'easters, but 40 seconds later Houghton struck again with her fourth goal of the game.
 
Barrie Guertin scored an unassisted goal with 6:19 remaining as the Nor'easters tied the game once again at 9-9 before Houghton found Luster for the game-winner.
 
The Nor'easters held a 28-22 advantage in shots, and Keri Tremblay improved to 3-0 in net for the Bison with 11 saves. Madison Bruzzese had seven stops for UNE in the loss.
 
The Nor'easters return home on Tuesday night against Wentworth at 7 p.m.
