MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- The University of New England women's track & field team kicked off its second season as a varsity program on Saturday (Mar. 26) in Wesleyan University's Swanson Spring Classic at the Andersen Track. The meet could not be fully completed, and did not produce team scoring, as inclement weather entered the area.
Erica Dimmick had the highest finish in an event for the Nor'easters, taking 3rd place in the 400m with a time of 1:02.69 -- 1.43 off the lead pace.
Anna Evans recorded a 1.52m high jump to place 4th. It was the first time UNE competed in that particular event in its young program history, which could be said for five others on Saturday.
Sophia King ran in the 100m hurdles (18.86) and 400m hurdles (1:17.74), while
Sienna Matregrano was the squad's top performer in the shot put (8.69m) and the javelin throw (24.34m). The group of
Rachel Pion,
Ashley Kelley, King, and Dimmick ran the 4x100 relay for the first time, clocking a 52.94 that was 3.60 off the first-place time.
Improving upon her own program standards for the long jump (4.84m) and triple jump (9.83m) wasÂ
Sydni Lehr, whose long jump effort was only 0.34 behind the lead performance at the meet.
Kelsee Gladu knocked more than 12 seconds off UNE's top time from 2021 in the 3,000m, crossing the line in 11:31.56.
Pion's 13.47 in the 100m sprint was 1.49 seconds back of the leader, in 9th, but also a mere 0.01 behind her personal best from last season.
In addition to the host Cardinals, competitors at the meet included Division II University of New Haven, and a Division III field from Connecticut College, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Endicott College, Gordon College, Smith College, Emmanuel College, Westfield State University, Mount Holyoke College, Eastern Connecticut State University, Lesley University, and the Sage Colleges.
