WNEU upends UNE, 16-8, to start CCC play

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Western New England University scored the first five goals of the game on its way to a 16-8 victory over the University of New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Golden Bear Stadium.
 
Anabella Arias recorded two of her game-high three goals as the Golden Bears (6-2, 1-0 CCC) built a 5-0 lead after 6:04 of the first quarter. Barrie Guertin put the Nor'easters (1-7, 0-1 CCC) at the 7:16 mark of the frame before Liz Mazza scored her second goal to make it 6-1 in favor of Western New England after a period.
 
Western New England extended its lead to 12-2 at the half as six different Golden Bears scored in the second quarter. Jozie Bolduc found Anna Stowell for the lone UNE goal.
 
The Nor'easters built a small comeback in the third quarter with four straight goals. Ann Chapman buried her first of two in the game as UNE had an extra player early in the third. A pair of Skylar McComas goals sandwiched a marker by Morgan White to trim the deficit to 12-6 through three quarters.
 
Ally Ferraro ended the run with a goal for WNE in the opening minute of the fourth quarter. Chapman and Abby McHallam answered for UNE to close the gap to 13-8. But the Golden Bears scored the final three goals of the game.
 
Western New England held a 47-28 advantage in shots and 26-18 in ground balls.
 
Faith Graveline made six saves and allowed two goals in the first half to earn the victory in net for WNE. Madison Bruzzese had 15 saves in the loss.
 
The Nor'easters return to action at home on Wednesday against Endicott at 4 p.m.
