Late spurt leads Huskies past Nor’easters, 7-3

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The University of Southern Maine scored the final four goals of the game to pick up a 7-3 victory over the University of New England in each team's season-opener on Thursday afternoon at UNE Blue Bolt Field.
 
Ann Chapman created a turnover, picked up the loose ball, and quickly scored to put the Nor'easters in front 3:19 into the game [Watch]. The lead would hold until two goals by Rachel Shanks in the final 1:33 of the first quarter put the Huskies in front 2-1.
 
Southern Maine extended its lead to 3-1 after a goal by Jennifer Darasz off an assist by Kiaya Gatchell at the 10:01 mark of the second period. Barrie Guertin answered with a goal for UNE to trim the deficit to 3-2 at halftime [Watch]. Kelsey Hartigan found Guertin with a quick pass in front of the net to assist on the goal.
 
Nicole Corriveau found Anna Stowell for a score early in the third quarter to knot the game [Watch]. The Huskies took control from there, scoring four consecutive times to end the quarter ahead 7-3. Sharnks put the visitors in front for good with her third goal of the game. Emily Cloutier followed with her first of two just 18 seconds later. Evelyn Hinkley and Cloutier scored the final two goals of the game.
 
CeCe Racine stopped 14 shots for Southern Maine to earn the victory in goal. Madison Bruzzese had nine saves for UNE.
 
The Nor'easters return to Blue Bolt Field on Tuesday against Plymouth State at 5 p.m.
