Nichols edges UNE, 2-1, in regular season finale

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Sydney Royce scored her first goal of the season in the second period to provide the difference as Nichols College defeated the University of New England, 2-1, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's hockey action to close the regular season on Saturday.
 
With the victory, Nichols (15-8-1, 10-7-1 CCC) breaks a tie with UNE to secure the third seed in the conference championship and will host sixth-seed Salve Regina in the quarterfinals. The #4-seed Nor'easters (9-12-2, 9-7-2 CCC) welcome fifth-seed Western New England to the Forum on Wednesday at 7 p.m. for a first-round matchup. [Interactive Bracket]
 
Each team recorded a power play goal in the first period as the score was tie 1-1 at intermission. McKenna Remillard put UNE on the board as she redirected a pass from Piper Desorcie into the net during a 5-on-3 advantage with 7:05 to play in the period [Watch]. Avery Lutrzykowski also assisted on the tally. Grace Wiggett knotted it for the Bison up with just over a minute remaining.
 
Jordyn McGuire fed Royce right in front of the net and she stuffed home the deciding goal at the 7:12 mark of the second period.
 
UNE had a few great chances in the third period to tie the game, but Bison goaltender Victoria Bakapanos turned them away. She made 29 saves in the victory.

Delanie Corcoran had 23 stops for the Nor'easters.
