CASTINE, Maine -- The University of New England utilized balance and depth to rack up a 163-96 women's swimming victory over Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday (Nov. 19) at the Bok Pool.
The Nor'easters (4-2) spread out seven individual event wins across six swimmers, with
Olivia Roy as the only one notching two. Roy's solo day consisted of topping the fields in the 100-butterfly (1:06.53) and 100-IM (1:10.20), and working legs of the triumphant 400-medley relay and 200-freestyle relay groups.
Both relays established facility records at MMA. The 400-medley joined
Eloise Ring,
Annika Doeppers, Roy, and
Elli Donovan to clock 4:30.81, which was more than two seconds faster than a UNE squad from one year ago. The 200-freestyle team of
April Falstad,
Ari Cioffi, Donovan, and Roy (1:49.89) shaved nearly one second off the previous pool mark.
Ring, Donovan, and Doeppers each put up first-place efforts in events for UNE, as well. Ring earned top points in the 200-IM (2:36.90) and Donovan claimed the 200-freestyle (2:10.51), while Doeppers edged teammate
Maggie Sperry with a 34.81 in the 50-breaststroke (+0.89).
Meg Cabral captured the closest finish of the afternoon by posting 1:18.32 in the 100-breaststroke, just fractionally ahead of Cioffi (+0.13). Katie Durra also supported the Nor'easter cause with a win in the 50-butterfly (30.13).
For the Mariners, Ellie Brewer took three races (50-freestyle, 100-freestyle, 500-freestyle) and Liza Zhukov accounted for two (50-backstroke, 100-backstroke). Both had close calls with UNE competitors, as Brewer's 26.03 in the 50 free was narrowly in front of Cioffi's 27.05, and Zhukov's 1:10.09 in the 100 back clipped
Taylor Gibson by a mere 0.29 seconds.
The Nor'easters will be back in action three weeks from now (Dec. 2-3) at the Maine Meet.
