WESTON, Mass. -- The University of New England women's swimming team captured eight individual races and both relays to begin the 2022-23 campaign with victories over Regis College, 161-113, and the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.), 202-53, on Saturday (Oct. 8) at the Regis Pool.
Six of the solo event wins came from
Annika Doeppers,
April Falstad, and
Elli Donovan. Doeppers coasted to first-place in the 1000-freestyle (11:52.02) and the 100-breaststroke (1:15.18), and Donovan started her rookie season by touching the wall first in the 200-freestyle (2:12.40) and 100-freestyle (1:00.03). Falstad came out on top twice from tight finishes; in the 50-freestyle (27.43), she was a mere 0.27Â in front of Regis' Olivia Roux, and the margin was the same in 500-freestyle (6:01.05), but with teammate
Katie Durrua as the runner-up.
Durrua got a win of her own in the closest race of the day, clocking 1:07.98 in the 100-butterfly to nip fellow Nor'easter
Olivia Roy by 0.04 seconds.
UNE's other individual triumph came from first-year
Eloise Ring, who logged 32.61 in the 50-backstroke to edge (+0.42) Megan Miller of Regis. Later in the meet, Ring narrowly took second-place in the 50-butterfly (31.66), 0.42 seconds behind Riley Aptt of the Pride.
Ring was joined by
Ari Cioffi, Durrua, and Donovan to post 2:05.06 in the 200-medley relay, which was just 0.45 ahead of the group from Regis. To wrap things up for the Nor'easters' winning effort in the 200-freestyle relay (1:51.93), Cioffi and Donovan took care of the first two legs while Doeppers and Falstad brought it home.
UNE will participate in the Roger Williams University Invitational next Saturday.
