PORTLAND, Maine -- The University of New England men's golf team combined for its lowest 18-hole total of the season on Monday (Oct. 3) to wrap up the two-day University of Southern Maine Fall Classic at Riverside Golf Course. The Nor'easters placed 5th out of six with an overall score of 632.

The host Huskies (312-305) were four strokes back of overnight leader Nichols College (308-309) entering the day, but rallied to tie the Bison at 617 with four rounds in the 70s. USM's non-counting score from round two was the tiebreaking edge needed to claim the team title. Castleton University (622: 313-309) and Rhode Island College (631: 317-314) took third and fourth, respectively, in front of UNE (323-309).

Individually, Trevor Flanagan of Saint Joseph's College followed up a 74 with 76 (150) to win by a couple over Nick Ojala from Castleton.

The Nor'easters' Sunday score came from Rob Prentiss (78), Tom Higgins (81), Jack Sicurella (82), and Will Goldberg (82). Higgins had an eagle on the 317-yard, par-4 8th hole during round one action.

On Monday, UNE was the most consistent group at the event, with all five numbers in the 70s. Jake Mielcarz rebounded to lead the squad with a four-over 76, including an eagle on the par-5 4th hole. Higgins fired 77, Prentiss and Goldberg added 78, and Sicurella shot 79.

The 36-hole sums finished at Prentiss with 156 in a tie for ninth out of 34 players, Higgins at 158, Goldberg with 160, and both Mielcarz and Sicurella on 161. Goldberg paced the squad with four birdies during the tournament, and only two players in the field had more pars than Prentiss (23).

The Nor'easters get a couple weeks off from competition before completing the fall schedule at the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championship at The Captains Course in Massachusetts on October 15-16.
