STANDISH, Maine -- The University of New England used superior depth to defeat Saint Joseph's College of Maine by a 169-76 margin in women's swimming action on Friday evening (Oct. 28) at the Harold Alfond Center Pool.
In the eight solo event wins for the Nor'easters (3-0), UNE had the runner-up on six occasions.
Katie Durrua and
Eloise Ring accounted for half of those victories, and the two paired up with
Annika Doeppers and
Elli Donovan to pad the visiting total with a triumph in the opening 200-medley relay (2:02.31).
Durrua clocked a 1:08.17 in the 100-butterfly and 30.10 in the 50-butterfly to gain first-place points, while Ring took the 100-backstroke (1:09.20) and the 200-individual medley (2:34.09).
April Falstad supported with close second-place efforts in a couple of those races.
Taylor Gibson put the first individual victory on the board for the Nor'easters with a 12:49.45 in the 1000-freestyle. UNE quickly extended the lead to 55-11, as Doeppers then touched first in the 200-freestyle (2:08.32) and
Caitlin Cournoyer bested the field in the 50-backstroke (33.25). Later in the proceedings,
Regina Dyer added a 500-freestyle win (6:22.88).
Doeppers also participated in the closest finish of the night, hitting the wall in 1:14.24 during the 100-breaststroke, 0.40 seconds behind SJC's Tiffany Twombly. Twombly and Kiley Matthews each captured a couple events for the Monks.
UNE is headed for Mount Holyoke College next Saturday.
