WPI nets pair late to top UNE, 3-1

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Lauren Dishong and Arie Lang scored inside the final five minutes to give Worcester Polytechnic Institute a 3-1 field hockey result against the University of New England at Carr Field on Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 26).

Winners of six straight, the Engineers improve to 11-6 on the year. It was the regular-season finale for the Nor'easters (9-9), who take the Commonwealth Coast Conference's top seed into the tournament semifinals next Thursday.

UNE struck on its first shot, 5:40 into the match, when Madi Robito carried along the left end line and stuffed it between the legs of the goalie. Robito has a goal in three consecutive contests, and leads the squad with nine.

WPI pulled level in the 29th minute on Lang's first tally of the match. Her initial hit from just outside the circle was immediately knocked down, and stepped inside to fire one into the left corner. The hosts had all five shots and all three penalty corners in the 2nd.

The Nor'easters kept play away from danger in the 3rd, but had minimal chances of their own to regain the advantage. The visitors had their only two corners of the day in the frame, and Engineer goalie Nina Acquista stopped Robito on the lone shot of the quarter to keep it tied.

WPI found its footing again in the 4th, though, putting UNE goalie Lindsay Pych back into action for three of her four saves in the game during the initial portion of the stanza. The hosts eventually broke through with 4:48 left as Eliza Dutson setup Dishong in front for a backhanded flick around Pych. An insurance marker came with 1:21 to go, as a drive off Dishong's stick was redirected in by Lang.

Both of the Engineers' 4th-quarter goals came on set pieces. They totaled 12 shots and seven corners after 60 minutes of action.

UNE will be back in Biddeford for next week's CCC Championship, beginning with the winner of the No.4/5 first round match. The official seeds and bracket will be announced this Saturday.
