CANTON, Mass. – #15 Curry College scored four unanswered goals on its way to a 6-2 victory over the #10 University of New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's ice hockey action at the Canton Ice House on Friday.
Most of the scoring occurred in an action-packed first period.
Daniel Winslow put UNE, playing its first game since Dec. 11, on the board 5:10 into the night with an unassisted tally.
Curry answered with goals by Kalle Sundell and Austin Whelan just 51 seconds apart to grab a 2-1 lead with 10:42 to play in the opening period. Winslow added another, his team-leading eighth of the season, at the 8:59 mark of the first off an assist from
Collin Heinold to tie the game 2-2.
Tarek Paranica put in a power play goal with help from Nick Magill-Diaz and Eelis Laaksonen to give the Colonels back the lead for good. Nicholas Favaro found the back of the net with 12 seconds remaining in the first as Curry grabbed a 4-2 advantage.
Neither team could get on the board in the second period. Tao Ishizuka added a short-handed goal for Curry 5:02 into the third. Eetu Selanne made it 6-2 in favor of the Colonels as he scored with 6:43 to play. Daniel Eruzione and Timmy Kent each had assists on the final goal.
Curry outshot UNE 41-24 on the night.
Billy Girard IV had 35 saves in the loss. Reid Cooper stopped 22 shots in the victory.
Both teams return to the ice tomorrow night in Biddeford for the 6
th Annual Teddy Bear Toss beginning at 7 p.m.
