#7 Polar Bears stop UNE, 5-2

Statistics

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Bailey Prete scored twice in the opening 20 minutes of action as No.7 Bowdoin College topped the University of New England by a 5-2 margin in a field hockey matchup Wednesday night (Sep. 8) at Ryan Field.

After a rebound got the Polar Bears (1-0) on the board 5:20 into the 1st quarter, Prete then converted a cross from Abby Bashaw during the initial portion of the 2nd. Prior to halftime, Manveer Sandhu registered an assist as Faith Jennings redirected her shot into the back of the net for a 3-0 cushion.

The Nor'easters (2-1) wasted little time countering in the 3rd frame, as Sarah Padellaro finished a Jillian Lachapelle feed after just 50 seconds. Bowdoin pushed the gap back to three (4-1) midway through the period on a goal by Jill Cloonan, but 3:36 later the difference was reduced to two again. This time it was Lachapelle scoring, with the help of Morgan Mast.

The 4-2 spread held for nearly 15 minutes until Sandhu added some insurance with 5:35 left in the contest.

Maddie Ferrucci had one stop between the pipes for the hosts, who held an 18-3 advantage in total shots and 8-3 edge in penalty corners. Lindsay Pych made five saves in almost 42 minutes for UNE before giving way to Dawn DeWeese-Moss, who posted six of her own down the stretch.

The Nor'easter cap their stretch of road games to begin the year on Sunday with a visit to top-ranked Middlebury College.
