BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Behind scores of 73 and 74 from
Tom Higgins and
Marcus Costa, the University of New England fired a 306 in Saturday's Round 1 to hold 5th place out of the 16 squads competing at Brunswick Golf Club in the Bowdoin College Invitational.
The deep field, predominantly Maine and NESCAC conference institutions, is led by the 294 of Trinity College (Conn.). Husson University (297), Middlebury College (299), and Tufts University (303) stand ahead of the Nor'easters. Endicott College and Williams College are next in line at 313.
Higgins' number was not only a personal best raw total, but also matched eight other performances as UNE's fourth-lowest in relation to par (+1) in well over 20 years. As a program, the Nor'easters had not posted +18 or better since 2015.
After Costa, who did well following up his own round of 73 from an event earlier in the week,
Jake Mielcarz and
Colin Casamento wrapped up the Nor'easter score with 78 and 81, respectively.
Hunter Drew recorded an 85.
Trinity's Jack Godin had the top round of the day, carding a 3-under-par 69.
Round 2 is slated to begin Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
