BIDDEFORD, Maine --
Lindsay Bruns spun around and nailed a backhanded shot into the net with nine seconds left to give the University of New England a 4-3 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) field hockey triumph over Western New England University on Saturday afternoon (Sep. 25) at Blue Bolt Field.
Right after the Nor'easters saw a penalty corner play barely miss,
Bailey Lynch intercepted a clearing pass by the Golden Bears and navigated her way back into the circle to draw another corner for the hosts.
Julia Steeves received the insert and pushed it right for Bruns, who carried for a couple steps before reversing direction and hitting the game-winner inside the near post.

UNE (4-4, 2-0 CCC), which has topped WNEU (3-3, 1-1 CCC) in each of the 26 all-time meetings, never trailed in the match. Bruns opened the scoring in the 13th minute, taking a feed from
Lily Poor and turning for a shot through a crowd.
[Watch] Bruns now has a pair of two-goal games this year -- both in CCC action.
Sarah Johnston tied things up for the Golden Bears in the 22nd minute with a clever backhand lift into the side netting, but the Nor'easters struck twice before halftime to regain the advantage.
Jillian Lachapelle made it 2-1 with redirection off a long hit by
Kate Lindmark in the 24th
[Watch], and Steeves drilled home a corner insert from
Haylee Angster in the 28th.
Western New England pulled to within 3-2 in the 34th minute as Emily Campbell collected the rebound from her own initial attempt that was blocked and jammed it in. That spread held until the visitors evened the score with 9:00 on the clock in the 4th, when Taylor Klesyk sent a ball towards the cage and Johnston simultaneously jumped out of the way and tipped it past the keeper.
UNE finished ahead in shot attempts (17-8) and amassed a 12-2 cushion in corner chances.
Lindsay Pych recorded three saves for the Nor'easters, while Zoey Wexler turned in seven stops for the Golden Bears.
With the postponement of Sunday's scheduled contest against Colby College, UNE will next take to the field at Wellesley College on Wednesday.
