Nor'easters capture Southern Maine Cup

GORHAM, Maine -- Consistency throughout the lineup proved to be the difference for the University of New England men's golf team as it won the modified-format Southern Maine Cup for the first time in event history on Thursday (Sep. 23) at Gorham Country Club.

After eight runner-up finishes in the previous 12 installments of the annual event hosted by USM, the Nor'easters became just the second squad other than the Huskies to secure the title. The competition breaks away from the traditional scoring of collegiate golf and pairs teammates for an 18-hole round with three sections -- six holes in the format of best ball, six holes of scramble, and six holes of modified alternate shot.

UNE posted 223 to knock off USM by a couple (225), and the University of Maine-Farmington wound up third at 231. The Huskies and Beavers were each lower than UNE when combining the two best scores (USM 144, UMF 147, UNE 148), but went 81 and 84, respectively, to round out their totals.

Colin Casamento & Rob Prentiss were the top-scoring duo for the Nor'easters with a 2-over-par 73. The other two pairs -- Tom HigginsCal Crosby, and Jake Mielcarz & Jack Sicurella -- both shot 75. Following a 40 on the opening nine holes, Mielcarz and Sicurella carded UNE's only under-par nine coming home (35).

The low rounds of the day (72) came from USM's Carter Burnell & John Welch and Brogan Kane & Zach Ellsworth.

The Nor'easters now head for the Bowdoin College Invitational this weekend (Saturday 12:30 pm, Sunday 8:30 am) at Brunswick Golf Club.
