BIDDEFORD, Maine – Anna Cote scored a second quarter goal for the difference as Bates College defeated the University of New England, 1-0, in a non-conference field hockey matchup on Tuesday evening.

Cote deked out a Nor'easter defender near the top of the circle and launched a high shot to the top-left corner of the goal for the score with 5:57 to play in the second quarter. Bates (3-2) nearly went ahead in the first quarter, but a penalty stroke by Riley Burns went just wide.

UNE (3-4) had chances in the third quarter with help from three penalty corners, but were unable to break through.

The Nor'easters nearly tied it late. An attempt by Lindsay Bruns from close range with 28 seconds left was kicked away by Bobcat goalkeeper Grace Biddle. UNE was awarded a penalty corner off the rebound, but a miscue on a pass ended the threat.

Bates held a narrow edge in shots at 9-7. Biddle and UNE keeper Lindsay Pych each had three saves on the night.

UNE hosts Western New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action on Saturday at 1 p.m.
