MIDDLETOWN, R.I. --
Lindsay Bruns notched two 1st-quarter goals as the University of New England rolled over Salve Regina University, 5-1, to begin the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) field hockey slate on Saturday afternoon (Sep. 18) at Gaudet Field.
The result ends a three-game skid to nationally-ranked opponents for the Nor'easters (1-0 CCC), who level out at 3-3 overall. UNE has won 12 in-a-row against the Seahawks, who suffer their first defeat of the year (5-1, 0-1 CCC).
Bruns struck in the 11th and 14th minutes, and
Madi Robito added one in the 2nd to make a 3-0 halftime advantage. Two more quick tallies in the 3rd from
Haylee Angster and
Bailey Lynch increased the cushion to 5-0 by the 36th minute.
Starting goalie
Lindsay Pych made four saves through 40 minutes of work for the Nor'easters, and
Dawn DeWeese-Moss denied a couple the rest of the way.
Shannon Kennedy got Salve Regina on the board to break up the shutout with 4:29 remaining. In goal for the hosts, starter Olivia Butler recorded six stops in just under 40 minutes, and Bryn Protheroe had four down the stretch.
UNE, which finished on top of a 19-13 edge in total shots, returns to Biddeford for a non-league date with Bates College on Tuesday (7 p.m.).
