UNE finishes 5th at CCC Championship

BEVERLY, Mass. -- The University of New England started and ended Round 2 of the 2021 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Men's Golf Championship on Monday (Apr. 26) at Beverly Golf & Tennis Club in 5th place out of the eight competing teams with a 36-hole total of 653.

Overnight leader Western New England held on for a five-shot victory to earn the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Championship in West Virginia. The Golden Bears (621) backed up their opening 303 with 318 to top Endicott College (626), which posted another 313 behind medalist Nick Grimbilas (149). After a 76 on Sunday, Grimbilas carded a 3-over-par 73 on the 6,276-yard course to win by two.

Gusty winds challenged the majority of the 39-player field, as the scoring average increased 2.4 strokes and the quantity of rounds below 80 dropped from 15 to 5.

Nichols College at 634 (312-322) and Roger Williams University with 647 (311-346) took the next two spots ahead of the Nor'easters (319-334), and Wentworth Institute of Technology was a few back at 655 (321-334).

Thomas Higgins led UNE with a two-day score of 157 (77-80), good for a share of 6th place individually.

The Nor'easters' second-round number had help from Marcus Costa (83), Colin Casamento (85), and Jake Mielcarz (86). For the 36 holes, Costa registered 164, Hunter Drew shot 168, and both Casamento and Mielcarz had 169.
