BIDDEFORD, Maine – The University of New England women's lacrosse team opened its 2021 season with a 24-6 victory over Curry College in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at UNE Blue Bolt Field on Saturday afternoon.
Keara Dwyer paced the Nor'easters with four goals and three assists.
Ann Chapman also scored four times in her first action.
Casey Conwell and
Kelsey Hartigan added three goals and an assist each.
Molly Camelo provided five points on two goals and three helpers.
UNE (1-0, 1-0 CCC) took control from the opening whistle with goals by Camelo and Conwell giving the host a 2-0 lead just 40 seconds into the game. Sharon Doherty put Curry (1-4, 1-4 CCC) on the board with her eighth of the season. She led Curry with three on the day.
The Nor'easters scored seven straight from there to take a 9-1 advantage with 16:07 left to play in the first half. Chapman had three of her goals during the stretch.
Allie Wysocki brought the Colonels as close as they would get with back-to-back goals near the 13:45 mark of the half to cut the lead to 9-3.
UNE led 16-3 at the half, and the second period was much of the same with the Nor'easters outscoring the visitors 8-3.
Cassie Pastorelli,
Jozie Bolduc, and
Megan Beaulieu each tallied the first goals of their career in the final period.
Madison Bruzzese made seven saves and go the win in net for UNE.
Samantha Bates stopped one shot for the Nor'easters in the second half. Jessica Ginaitt had four early saves before exiting the game for Curry.
The game marked the first for the Nor'easters since March 10, 2020.
UNE is back in action at Gordon on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
