Late goal lifts Nor’easters past Mules, 4-3

WATERVILLE, Maine Liam Darcy scored a third-period goal to lift the University of New England over Colby, 4-3, in men's ice hockey action at the Harold Alfond Athletics & Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon.
 
Austin Morgan and Connor Lind assisted on the game-winning goal as Darcy beat Mules' goaltender CJ Hapward with 9:27 to play in regulation.
 
Colby held a 2-1 advantage after 20 minutes of play. Brian Sanzone put the hosts on the board just 1:08 into play. The Nor'easters answered with a power play goal by Jeff Eppright to tie the game. Quinn Doyle scored at the 5:48 mark of the first to give the Mules the lead at intermission.
 
Jake Fuss knotted the game two minutes into the second period. Colby nearly took a 3-2 lead in the frame, but had a goal called off due to an infraction and the score remained tied headed into the final period.
 
UNE took its first lead of the day as Brett Mecrones found the back of the net early in the third. Aaron Aragon and Brent Hill helped on the go-ahead score. Doyle added a shorthanded tally, his second of the afternoon, 4:55 into the period to knot it up once again before Darcy's game-winner.
 
Billy Girard IV also had 28 saves to earn the victory in net. Morgan and Mecrones each had two points for the Nor'easters. Hapward stopped 28 shots for Colby, and Alex Bourhas added two assists for the Mules.
 
These teams return to action tomorrow afternoon in Biddeford at 1 p.m.
