GORHAM, Maine – The University of New England men's ice hockey team took down the University of Southern Maine, 6-2, in an exhibition game on Saturday evening (Feb. 20) at the USM Ice Arena. It was the first outside competition for the Nor'easters in 357 days.

The Huskies jumped on the board just 1:54 after the opening whistle as Austin Marini tallied a goal.

That margin held until midway through the second period, when Derek Mecrones found his brother Brett Mecrones to tie the game. Brent Hill also assisted on the play. Austin Morgan gave the Nor'easters the lead heading into the intermission with a power play tally, assisted by Chris Jones and Collin Heinold with 5:26 left in the frame.

UNE put the game out of reach early in the third as Derek Mecrones and Hill scored just 21 seconds apart to extend the lead to 4-1. Jeff Eppright and Logan DiScanio put home late tallies for the Nor'easters. Colton McAllister added to the host's total with a goal in the final minute.

The Mecrones brothers ended with three points apiece, as did Liam Darcy with three helpers. Brendan Donohue made it 10 players to factor in the scoring with an assist down the stretch.

Rookie goalie Billy Girard IV made 22 saves for UNE. Gabriel Couture had 31 stops for Southern Maine.
