Two third period goals push Nichols over UNE, 3-2

HARRISVILLE, R.I. – Megan Buxton broke a tie with 8:11 to play as Nichols College defeated the University of New England, 3-2, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's ice hockey matchup on Saturday.
 
Elizabeth Walsh was able to tie the game 2-2 for UNE on a power-play goal with 11:14 remaining in the third period. Kara Santoro found Buxton for the game winner just over two minutes later as Nichols improved to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in CCC play on the early season.
 
The Nor'easters (1-2, 1-1 CCC) got on the board first as Piper Desorcie popped in a power-play goal with help from Bella Crugnale and Abbi Charvat 8:45 into play. The 1-0 lead stood through the first period.
 
Mel McAleer knotted it up in the second period. Melissa Montesi hit Kaci Johnson for a goal to put the Bison in front 6:30 into the third.
 
UNE outshot Nichols 31-25 on the day. Victoria Bakapanos made 29 saves in the win. Kaleigh Laurendeau had 22 stops in the loss.
 
The Nor'easters return to action at home on Friday night against #8 Endicott at 7 p.m.
