Scoring Summary
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Rebecca Vakarau scored three tries to lead Bowdoin College over the University of New England, 31-12, in the National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) Division III Championship at the Anderson Rugby Complex in West Point, N.Y. on Sunday.
The Polar Bears (8-0) claim their second-consecutive NIRA Championship, defeating the Nor'easters (4-3) in the title game in 2019 as well.
Molly Petronzio put Bowdoin on the board to start the game with a try and conversion to take a 7-0 lead in the fifth minute. UNE answered with a try of their own as
Alyssa Ehrenfried was able to get in near the sideline but a missed conversion made the score 7-5.
Vakarau touched in for the next two Polar Bear tries as they took a 19-5 lead at the half. The Nor'easters nearly cut into the deficit with a score of their own in the final minute of the half, but were held up near the try line.
Bowdoin extended its lead to 31-5 with two quick scores to begin the second half. Ashlynn Autrey scored first and Vakarau followed three minutes later for a long run for her third try of the afternoon.
Victoria Bowler closed the gap to 31-12 in the 64
th minute. UNE was able to get near the try zone twice more, but unable to get through.
