Rams remain unbeaten with 4-1 result over UNE

Statistics

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Suffolk University scored the only goals of the 3rd period to break away from a tied game and secure a 4-1 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's ice hockey decision against the University of New England at the Harold Alfond Forum on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 20).

The Rams continue their unblemished start to the year, moving to 8-0 overall and 4-0 (11 points) in league outings. The Nor'easters slip to 2-5 on the season, 2-4 in the CCC (7 points).

Suffolk managed to keep UNE's nation-leading power play -- successful in six of its first 11 opportunities coming into the day -- off the board in five chances.

The Nor'easters did get the scoring started at the tail end of the 1st period (18:37), as Anna O'Neill flipped a backhand from the slot into the top-left corner of the net. McKenna Remillard and Avery Lutrzykowski registered assists on the play. [Watch]

The Rams got even in the middle of the 2nd on a late redirection by Shana Cote near the right post. The slapper from the point came from Madison Duff; Natasha Savage setup the drive.

Just 1:28 into the final frame, Suffolk edged in front. After Leslie Steiner dug out the puck behind her own net, Jesse Kennedy sent a half-ice outlet pass up the right wing to a streaking Maddy Burton, who managed to get an angle on the defender and guide one home.

Cassidy Gruning added some insurance just past the midway mark of the period, sneaking in a weak-side rebound off the initial shot by Cote. Julia Volpe tacked on an empty-net tally in the last minute.

Hannah Gordon turned in 29 saves for the visitors, while Kaleigh Laurendeau logged 27 on the opposite side for UNE.

The Nor'easters are off until next Saturday (Nov. 27, 3 p.m.) when Trinity College comes to town for a non-conference tilt.
