UNE downs Norwich, 32-5, to advance to NIRA Championship

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The second-seed University of New England rolled over #3 Norwich University, 32-5, in the National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) Division III Semifinals on Saturday afternoon at UNE Blue Storm Stadium.
 
UNE advances to the NIRA Championship against top-seeded Bowdoin in West Point, N.Y. on Sunday, Nov. 21. Polar Bears defeated the Nor'easters 27-5 in the 2019 NIRA Championship.
 
Fiona Thomas scored an early try for UNE in the 6th minute. Despite controlling possession, the Nor'easters were unable to add to the score until the 21st minute on a kick by Salma Bezzat to take an 8-0 lead. Emily Ramsey scooped up a loose ball and took it in from distance to for one of her two tries on the day in the 36th minute as UNE led 15-0 at the half. [Watch]
 
Julia Mast started the scoring in the second half with a try to extend the advantage to 20-0. Norwich was able to answer back with its only score of the game from Audrey Greeno in the 60th minute. Mackenzie Burke took a pass from Katie Berger 10 meters out and sliced through the Cadet defense for a try in the 68th minute [Watch]. Ramsey added her second score of the day in the 77th minute.
 
Bezzat was 2-of-3 on conversion kicks for the Nor'easters.
 
UNE came up with seven line outs on the afternoon to just four for Norwich. Jackie Federico led the Cadets with 16 tackles. Anita DiMento added 11 for the visitors. Alyssa Ehrenfried had seven stops while Thomas and Liz Cogan each had six.
