GORHAM, Maine --
Tom Higgins backed up an opening-round 72 with an even-par 71 as the University of New England men's golf team took 3rd out of five at the University of Southern Maine Fall Classic, which concluded Monday (Oct. 4) at Gorham Country Club.
The host Huskies trailed by three overnight, but dialed up a 293 in round two for a 36-hole total of 598 and a 19-stroke victory. Nichols College was next at 617 (302-315), then the Nor'easters with 621 (310-311), and Saint Joseph's College at 630 (311-319).
Higgins had three birdies and three bogeys on the way to his third career-best in the last four competitive rounds. At the same event/course six years ago was UNE's previous individual round at even, by Sam Kinasewich '17. The only other rounds equal or better (in relation to par) in program history belong to Owen Lennon '04 from the 2002 campaign -- an even 70 at Bath CC, and a 5-under 66 at Belgrade Lakes GC.
For Higgins, who led the tournament field in par-4 scoring, it was also the lowest 36-hole total by a UNE player on record.
John Welch of USM topped the 29 individuals with a two-day 142 (72-70), one ahead of Higgins.
UNE's scoring lineup on Monday nearly repeated itself from Sunday.
Jack Sicurella (156) shot another 78,
Jake Mielcarz (158) posted 79 again, and
Colin Casamento (164) came in with an 83.
The Nor'easters will be back in action next Wednesday (Oct. 13) in the UNE Invitational at nearby Cape Arundel Golf Club.
