BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Reegan McCluskey scored twice in the second half to lead No.3 Tufts University past the University of New England field hockey team by a 2-0 margin on Thursday evening (Oct. 21) at Blue Bolt Field.
After a scoreless opening 30 minutes, McCluskey put the Jumbos on the board in the 34th minute with a drive from the left side towards the far post. Melissa Manzello notched an assist with the short penalty corner insert.
McCluskey padded the cushion in the 54th minute, converting a penalty stroke for her seventh goal of the year.
The Nor'easter defense otherwise held together, while Tufts, averaging 3.75 goals per game, amassed a 22-2 advantage in total shots and several other near chances. The Jumbos (11-2), who won for a fourth straight outing, finished with a 14-2 edge in corners.
Lindsay Pych racked up 11 saves for the Nor'easters (9-6), who dropped their fifth match of the season to a nationally-ranked program currently inside the top 10 in Division III.
Kate Lindmark added a couple of defensive stops in support of Pych.
Sam Gibby was credited with the goalkeeping decision for the visitors by working the final 30 minutes. Andie Stallman recorded one save for Tufts in the 2nd quarter.
UNE (5-0 CCC) will wrap up the regular season next Saturday (Oct. 30) at home against Nichols College (0-4 CCC).
