BREWSTER, Mass. -- The University of New England men's golf squad placed 11th out of 16 institutions with a 36-hole score of 653 at the 86th Annual New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championship, which concluded Monday (Oct. 18) at The Captains Course [Starboard Course].
Babson College -- ranked No.9 in the latest national coaches poll -- ran away with the team title (591), increasing its overnight lead from 20 to 38 with a second-round 300. The Beavers accounted for the top three individuals, as well, including medalist Nicholas Gianelos, whose 1-under-par 143 total came from rounds of 71 and 72.
Husson University (629), Salem State University (633), Springfield College (633), and Endicott College (635) rounded out the top five, with slight shuffling from where things stood at the midway mark. Nichols College (640), Eastern Connecticut State University (643), Saint Joseph's College of Maine (648), Roger Williams University (649), and the University of Southern Maine (651) finished in front of the Nor'easters, who shot five strokes higher than on Sunday.
Tom Higgins (159) bounced back after an opening 82 with a 77 that featured three birdies. Higgins was one of seven competitors in the field of 80 to wrap the weekend playing under on the Par 5s (-1) -- as a group, UNE ranked fourth in Par 5 scoring.
Jake Mielcarz (161) posted an 82 in Round 2, while
Jack Sicurella (162),
Colin Casamento (171), and
Rob Prentiss (171) all came in with rounds of 85.
With the fall portion of the schedule now complete, the Nor'easters will look ahead to the two-day Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championship, which is slated to begin on April 30. Any other spring events will be added at a later date.
