HARTFORD, Conn. -- Caelin Flaherty netted a pair of 3rd-quarter goals as No.7 Trinity College (Conn.) picked up a 3-0 field hockey result against the University of New England on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 17) at Robin Sheppard Field.
The nationally-ranked Bantams rebound from their third loss of the year on Saturday to move to 10-3. The setback brings an end to the six-game unbeaten streak for the Nor'easters, who are now 9-5 overall with four losses to teams listed in the top 12 in Division III.
Trinity got on the board with 1:02 left in the opening period off the game's first penalty corner. Christine Taylor drilled a shot from the top of the arc inside the left post, with assists going to Kylie Tierney and Katrina Winfield. Chances either way were extremely limited in the 2nd, and the spread remained one at halftime.
UNE put together its best quarter in the 3rd, posting a 5-2 edge in shots and earning both corners. However, the tallies by Flaherty in the 32nd and 39th minutes, combined with all (4) of the saves from Olivia McMichael, only extended the margin (3-0).
The hosts registered half of their (18) shots and five of seven corners in the 4th, but could not get past the Nor'easter defense again. Action in the final 15 minutes brought the save total for
Lindsay Pych up to nine.
UNE's last non-conference match will be back in Biddeford on Thursday (6 p.m.) versus No.3 Tufts University.
