KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine --
Jake Mielcarz led the field with a 1-over-par round of 70 as the University of New England shot 294 to claim all the hardware in the UNE Men's Golf Invitational on Wednesday (Oct. 13) at Cape Arundel Golf Club.
The Nor'easters topped the standings at their own event for the first time ever, following six runner-up efforts over the years (first hosted in 2001). UNE narrowly bested the University of Southern Maine (296), which posted the lowest total for a second-place squad, and Endicott College (308) and Saint Joseph's College of Maine (329) rounded out the four-team tournament.
Mielcarz dropped in his third birdie of the day on the final hole to hold off the Huskies' Brogan Kane. Playing together, Mielcarz had a four-stroke cushion on Kane through 12 holes, but needed the last putt to go as Kane was staring at a shorter birdie attempt (which he made for 71). Both recorded an even-par 34 on the closing 9. Mielcarz lowered his personal best by five with the overall performance.
Three others -- UNE's
Tom Higgins, and both Zach Ellsworth and John Welch of USM -- came in with 73. Like Mielcarz, Higgins sunk three birdies along the way.
The Nor'easter depth and consistency proved to be the difference. After Mielcarz and Higgins,
Jack Sicurella made a field-best 14 pars and shot 35 on the back side to wind up with 75 -- a personal low.
Marcus Costa also came home strong (36) to end at 76.
Colin Casamento was in line to factor in the team score for most of the round, and finished with 77.
The win for Mielcarz was the eighth outright or shared individual event 1st-place in program records, and the third in the history of the UNE Invitational.
UNE, as a team, now has two stroke-play victories on the season, matching the 2010 group for the most in a campaign.
The Nor'easters will wrap up the fall portion of their schedule on Sunday and Monday, as part of the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championship at The Captains Course in Massachusetts.
