BIDDEFORD, Maine – The University of New England women's lacrosse team used a 9-3 scoring run in the second half to push past Bridgewater State, 21-16, in non-conference action at UNE Blue Bolt Field on Friday.
Casey Conwell tied career-highs with five goals and seven points.
Keara Dwyer also had seven points on four goals and three assists.
Emily Jussaume,
Anna Stowell, and
Molly Camelo each added three goals. Camelo became the seventh player in team history to score 100 goals in her career.
Two early goals by the Bears turned a halftime lead by UNE into an 11-10 deficit. Stowell knotted the score with a free-position goal with 24:00 minutes left, sparking a three-goal spurt that gave the Nor'easters the lead for good.
Conwell and Jussaume followed with tallies as UNE extended the advantage to 13-11. Katherine Tracy pulled Bridgewater State within one before another three-goal run by the Nor'easters put the host in front 16-12, their largest lead to that point.
The Bears would get as close as 16-14 with 12:46 to play after goals by Kelsi Brennan and Hayley White. Dwyer scored twice in a row and Camelo buried her third of the day as UNE took its biggest lead at 19-14 with just over five minutes left. The teams traded scores down the stretch.
The first half featured five ties and six lead changes. Conwell scored twice in the opening minute. Bridgewater State responded with four straight markers, three by Emily Hiller to pull ahead 4-2. UNE put in three straight to take the lead back before another goal by Hiller gave the Bears a 6-5 advantage. Hiller finished with seven goals and nine points.
Stowell tied the score at 7-7 with 8:14 left in the first half and
Katelyn Nartiff and Camelo followed with tallies as the Nor'easters led the rest of the half. Jacqueline DeLorey scored for the visitors in the final minute to make it 10-9 in favor of UNE at the break.
Shots favored the Nor'easters 48-31 overall and 38-25 on goal. Defensively,
Madison Bruzzese had nine saves for UNE and
Danielle Skinner had three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Camelo and Conwell grabbed 11 and 10 draw controls, respectively.
Hayley Barner stopped 17 shots in the loss for BSU.
The Nor'easters are back at home on Tuesday, March 10 against #17 Colby at 4:30 p.m.
