Southern Maine gets past UNE in double OT, 17-16

GORHAM, Maine – Alex Farley scored a free-position goal in double overtime to lead the University of Southern Maine past the University of New England, 17-16, in women's lacrosse action at Hannaford Field on Wednesday.
 
Down 12-10 early in the second half, the Nor'easters staged a 6-1 scoring run to pull in front 16-13 with 8:20 remaining in regulation. Anna Stowell scored three of her four goals during the run. Molly Camelo, Emily Jussaume and Katelyn Nartiff also helped UNE build the lead.
 
Megan Violette scored three times down the stretch for the Huskies, including the tying goal with just 41 seconds left to send the game into overtime.
 
UNE outshot Southern Maine 3-1 in the first extra period, but neither team was able to get on the board. Jussaume won the draw to start the second overtime and a shot attempt by Casey Conwell was saved by Huskies' goaltender Mariah Vaillancourt. Southern Maine was able to clear the ball and Farley put in the winner 1:06 into the period.
 
Scoring was back-and-forth all afternoon, as neither team led by more than two until the late three-goal Nor'easter advantage.
 
Farley led Southern Maine with five goals. Rachel Shanks and Violette each added four goals and an assist. Vaillancourt made 17 saves to earn the win.
 
Camelo had five goals for UNE while Jussaume joined Stowell with four. Conwell dished out four assists and a team-high three caused turnovers. Kelli Van Dam had three helpers. Madison Bruzzese played most of the game in goal for the Nor'easters and finished with eight saves.
 
UNE returns home on Friday against Bridgewater State at 4 p.m.
