MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – The University of New England women's ice hockey team earned a 3-2 victory of Salve Regina on Saturday afternoon in a Colonial Hockey Conference (CHC) matchup at St. George's Rink.
Carolyn Curley put in a shorthanded goal, the first of her career, 3:40 into the opening period off a pass from
Bella Crugnale to give UNE the early lead. Caroline Prezioso knotted the game with score later in the period as the team were tied 1-1 through a frame.
The Nor'easters (13-5-2, 8-2-2 CHC) broke the game open in the second period with goals by
Jessie Scott and
Marykate Drinkwater. Scott gave UNE the lead at the 9:30 mark of the stanza with help from Megan Hamilton and Drinkwater. Drinkwater made the score 3-1 with 50 seconds remaining in the period.
Tatum Gietl and
Kenady Nevicosi provided assists on the goal.
Amanda Fantasia trimmed the deficit to 3-2 with 4:46 left to play. The Nor'easters were able to withstand a 6-on-5 over the final 1:45 after the Seahawks (4-16-0, 1-11-0 CHC) pulled their goaltender to come away with the win.
The Nor'easters led in shots 30-27 on the day.
Julia Benjamin turned away 25 attempts to pick up the victory in net. Madison Jalbert had 25 stops for Salve Regina.
UNE returns to the ice at home on Friday night (Feb. 7) against Nichols at 7 p.m.
