CANTON, Mass. – #8 University of New England battled back from three separate deficits to defeat Curry, 6-4, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's ice hockey action at the Canton Ice House on Saturday afternoon. The Nor'easters are 2-0-1 against the Colonels this season and have come from behind in the third period in each meeting.
A goal by
Brett Mecrones with just over a minute remaining in the second period knotted the score at 3-3 heading into the final stanza. Alex Ochterbeck tallied his 12
th goal of the season 4:18 into the third to give the Colonels a 4-3 advantage. The Nor'easters would keep the hosts off the board the rest of the way.
Alex Sheehy put home his first score of the year to tie the game for the third time on the day.
Aaron Aragon found
Jimmy Elser with 8:46 to play to give UNE (14-3-2, 10-1-1 CCC) the lead for good.
Chris Jones added an empty net goal in the final minute for the winning margin.
Michael Snow started the scoring for Curry (12-4-3, 7-3-2 CCC) with help from Joseph Thielen at the 4:17 mark of the opening period.
Ryan Bloom tied the game just 23 second later with his 11
th goal of the year. Nick Magill-Diaz scored two straight to close the first and open the second as the Colonels jumped in front 3-1.
Bloom and
Chad Merrell helped on a score by
Dimitris Jones to trim the margin to 3-2 for UNE before Mecrones knotted the score once again.
Mecrones, Bloom, Merrell, and
Liam Darcy each finished with two points for the Nor'easters. Mic Curran, Viktor Jansson, and Magill-Diaz had multi-point games for Curry.
Justin Ketola made 34 saves in the loss.
Ben Churchfield had 27 stops to help UNE to victory.
The Nor'easters are back on the road on Friday night (Feb. 7) at Nichols at 6:40 p.m.
