BIDDEFORD, Maine -- University of New England
President James Herbert has named
Kristen Bailey '02 as the Faculty Athletics Representative, to serve as a liaison between the institution and the athletics department, and as a representative of the institution in conference and NCAA affairs. Bailey will be replacing
Dennis Leighton, DPT, who is retiring at the conclusion of the semester after more than 24 years at the post.
"Kristen's deep knowledge of athletics, coupled with her academic credentialing as a certified athletic trainer, perfectly positions her for the role of FAR," shared President Herbert. "I am confident that as a strong advocate for students, Kristen will advance a positive, high-quality student-athlete experience at UNE."
Bailey has been back at her alma mater as a faculty member since 2006, and is now an Associate Clinical Professor of Athletic Training in the Department of Exercise and Sport Performance. She was also an Assistant Athletic Trainer to the Nor'easters for her first seven years (2006-13) as a professional in Biddeford.
"I appreciate the trust President Herbert has in me to fulfill this position for the University," said Bailey. "As a former student-athlete and employee within the Athletics Department, I look forward to reconnecting with the staff and operations through this role. I'm thankful to Dennis for his guidance as we make this transition, and I'm excited to start supporting all the efforts that produce such an impactful student-athlete experience here at UNE."
A 2002 graduate from the University with a bachelor's degree in athletic training, Bailey (formerly Swallow) played four years of softball for UNE before heading to California University of Pennsylvania, where she earned her master's in 2003. While at CUP, she was a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Washington & Jefferson College in Pennsylvania [NCAA III]. Following graduate school, Bailey spent two years (2003-05) as Head Athletic Trainer and Instructor of Athletic Training at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. She then returned to her home state to work as an Athletic Trainer and Rehabilitation Aide at Saco Bay Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy in Standish. During that time, she also served as Head Athletic Trainer at Bonny Eagle High School.
