OSWEGO, N.Y. – #9 University of New England held on for a 4-3 victory over #10 Oswego State in the third place game of the Pathfinder Bank Hockey Classic at Marano Arena on Saturday evening.
Ryan Bloom put the visitors in front with his team-leading seventh goal of the year, a power-play score, early in the first period. Travis Broughman answered with his first of two on the night as the game reached the first intermission tied 1-1.
The Nor'easters (10-3) opened a 2-1 lead as
Tyler Seltenreich popped in a score late in the second period. The junior earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team. The go-ahead goal was assisted by both Derek and
Brett Mecrones. UNE extended its advantage to 3-1 as
Jimmy Elser scored in the opening minute of the third period.
The teams alternated goals from there, first as Tanner Spink trimmed the deficit to 3-2 for the Lakers.
Derek Mecrones tallied what proved to be the difference at the 11:25 mark of the third. Broughman put in his second of the match with 2:42 to play, but
Ben Churchfield was able to keep Oswego State off the board the rest of the way.
Brett Mecrones finished with three assists.
Derek Mecrones (two assists) and Seltenreich (one goal, one assist) each had two points.
The Lakers nearly doubled the Nor'easters shot total at a 42-22 clip. Churchfield kept the visitors in front, tying a season-best with 39 saves. David Richer made 18 stops for the Lakers (7-5).
The Nor'easters return to action at the Harold Alfond Forum against Morrisville State on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 4 p.m.
